Last night was an interesting night for me. I closed last night, and as the night progressed, it got increasingly humid out. Whenever a good storm approaches for the past 13 years, my right ankle throbs. Back in 1996 during my senior year of high school, I had an accident in gym class and ended up tearing some ligaments in my ankle. Needless to say, things never quite healed properly and to this day it aches when it rains. So, with the humidity rising last night and our penchant for storms these past 3 weeks, I thought nothing of it.

After work, I headed up to Wegmans since I really needed an Asian food fix. Upon leaving the store, my right shin started to really bother me. I thought nothing of it and just attributed it to being tired. When I got home, i sat down at my computer for about 20 minutes eating some sushi. It was then, that my entire lower right leg started to throb. This was unlike any throbbing I have ever experienced before. It wasn’t a muscular throbbing, but rather a skeletal throbbing. As the night went on, it got worse and worse. By 3:30am, the pain was too much for me to take. It literally felt as if my leg bone was shattering from the inside out. I finally threw up my white flag and did something I very rarely do — I took some medication. After taking a muscle relaxer and a vicodin, I laid back down on the couch. Still in extreme pain, I told myself that if the vicodin didn’t relieve the pain in 2 hours, I would consider going to the emergency room. My biggest fear was that I had fractured my leg and was unaware.

When my self imposed 2 hour deadline arrived, the pain had indeed lessened, but not enough to allow me to sleep. Knowing a 9 hour shift on my feet would be impossible, I called into work and took a sick day. I then laid back down on the couch and decided that I would wait it out and not go to the ER. It was finally at 11am this morning that the pain had dissipated enough for me to finally fall asleep. I slept for a solid 6 hours and woke up, thankfully, pain free. I have no clue what the hell was going on in my leg, but I just hope it doesn’t happen again any time soon.

On a brighter note, being awake all night in pain did have a bight side. Two Christmases ago, Jess bought me the ‘Firefly’ DVD box set. Always wanting to see the series I was anxious to watch it. as luck would have it, I did not have any free time to really sit down and watch it. Jess however did since she had just broken her foot as was ordered to stay off of it. After finishing the series she told me that it was not only excellent, but very addicting. In fact, as she finished the last disc in the series she went out and bought ‘Serenity’, the follow-up movie.

Last night I was finally able to sit down and watch the entire box set. WOW! The series is awesome! Well, I should say that it WAS awesome since Fox killed it after only a few episodes. In fact, I just got done now watching ‘Serenity’, a most excellent movie.

It’s really a shame that the showed dies as young as it did. It was really a show that was not only ahead of its time, but could have lasted for years to come with the universe that was created. As much as I would love new ‘Firefly’, I know that the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. It’s too bad. Good science fiction is really hard to come by these days.
