Positive Affirmation

I was off this past Friday, so Jess and I decided to head to The Crossings to get some new clothes for Jackson. We went from shop to shop, buying some really cute clothes and enjoying the generous savings outlet store have to offer. We were towards the end of our trip when we walked into the Carters store. By this time, Jackson was sick and tired of being in his stroller all afternoon. So, letting my wife look around, I took him out of his stroller and carried him around the store. After picking out several outfits, it was time to check out. The lines weren’t that long at all, but Jackson was getting a bit fussy at this point. Plus, he was in need of a diaper change at this point. So, I just started playing with him while in line. I held him in my arms, quickly brought him to my face, and would ‘nibble’ on his neck. This made him giggle uncontrollably. He loved it! A few minutes of this, and we were thru the line and heading to the restrooms next door to change his diaper. Jess took over, taking Jackson into the ladies room to change him. A few minutes later, she came out smiling. I asked her what she was smiling about. She then told me a little story.

While she was in there changing Jackson, a lady came up to her and told her how cute Jackson was. Jess thanked her, and then the lady apparently went on about me. Here, she was in the Carters store while we were in there and saw what I was doing to him while in line. She told her to tell me that I was an excellent father. When she told me this, all I could do was smile. I’ve never been a father before, and I just try to do the best I can everyday. Somedays that’s more then enough, other days I feel like I fall short. It’s one thing when you wife, your friends, or your family tells you you’re doing a good job as a father. It’s another thing all together when a total stranger stops your wife in the restroom just to tell her her husband is a good father. That made me feel as if maybe I am doing something right after all.

In other weekend news, Saturday brought a special delivery of something I have been wanting to buy my wife for a few months now. When most men want to make their wives happy with a surprise gift, they automatically think jewelry. While true, most women go ga-ga over diamonds, my girl is a little different. What did I buy my wife that made her count down the days until it arrived?

Yep, my wife got excited over a new washing machine. That’s why I love this girl! All kidding aside, she really did look forward to this bad boy getting delivered. You see, we live in a house where there is a never ending stream of dirty laundry. There are 3 of us, doing laundry in a 2.4 cubic foot washing machine. Sure, that machine was more than enough for me when I originally bought it in 2003; I was single then and only had o wash clothes for myself. Add a wife and son into the mix, and you’re looking at more loads hen there are hours in the day. On top of all of this, I have been in a real ‘energy savings’ mode for the past year or so. I’ve changed out all our lightbulbs for CFLs, put in new windows and doors, as well as starting to better insulate the house. The results of all of this came to fruition this winter with record low heating bills. So, when I decided to buy a new washer, it made sense to spend the extra money and get a high efficiency machine. No only does it use less electricity ($7 a year doing 8 loads per week!) but a lot less water then our current unit. (current unit uses 52g per load, new unit uses 12-26g per load)

So, the new washer was delivered and setup on Saturday morning while I was at work. Needless to say, Jess started right in on the laundry. Since we went from a 2.4 cubic foot machine to a 4.3 cubic foot machine, she was cleaning more clothes in a single load. How many more clothes? What she can do in 1 load in the new machine equals about 3 loads in the old machine. By Sunday evening, we were almost completely caught up on all of our laundry! A very worth while investment, especially considering the old washer started making some funny noises a few weeks ago!

Vacation #1 Of 2010 Complete

So I am at the end of my first week off of 2010. My vacation started off quite fun with me and Loki going out Monday morning and picking up the Collector’s Edition of Star Trek Online and me playing said game most of the day. On top of getting Star Trek Online, I also purchased 2 tickets to go see Alice In Chains next month at the arena. Can’t wait!

After that however, things got quite hectic. Tuesday saw us heading dow to Nazareth to have dinner with Jess’s entire family at her sister Brandi’s house. On Wednesday, we were headed back down south, but to Easton time to have dinner with Katie and Kelly. After dinner, we headed back to Kelly’s apartment and played with Jackson for a few hours.

Thursday was a rapid fire day of shopping. We needed to get some stuff for Jackson and some stuff for the house as well. After a few hours, we ended up back at the house and relaxed for the rest of the night.

Friday, I was headed back to Oak Lawn Cemetey to finish up the installation of their new office. After about 4 hours of cable management and finaly equipment configuration, I was done and headed home. Jess had a bunch of doctor appointments, she she quickly headed home between appointments to drop off Jackson. He and I hung out for a few hours before Jess came home and we had dinner. The night was cut pretty short since we both had a busy day on Saturday.

Saturday morning saw Jess leaving early to take another Praxis test. While she was taking her test, I was getting Jackson and myself ready so we could go to Kyla’s birthday party as soon as she got home. Once Jess did get home, we all piled into her car and headed to the party. After the party, we picked up a pizza and headed home. Once home, we ate some pizza and relaxed for about and hour before I left to go meet Jerry and JP for a night of fun. Needless to say we had a great time and I didn’t get home until about 3:30am.

Sunday brought a busy day for Jess, and a nice relaxing day for me. When I got up, Jess was already busy cleaning the house. While she did that, I decided to go play with Jackson for a little bit. After she was done with the dishes, the three of us sat down on the couch and started watching a movie on TV. After about 15 minutes, we deicided to all go lay down. Once the 3 of us laid down in bed, Jess decided to get up after about 10 minutes and clean. Still tired for the previous night out with the guys, I curled up with Jackson and we took an awesome mid-afternoon nap for about 3 hours. After we got up, I pretty much played with Jackson for the rest of the day. A totally awesome end to a crazy week.

I go back to work in less than 12 hours, and I’m okay with that. I just need to start planning my next week off!

Make It So

I’m weak.

It’s been years since I have played an MMORPG (Massive Multiple Online Role Playing Game) and I swore that the next one I would play would be the ever postponed ‘Stargate Worlds’.

I’m weak.

While it is true that there have been many an MMORPG that has come out since I stopped playing WoW (World of Warcraft) that I have been interested in, I have been strong. I have stayed true and held my convictions.

I’m weak. They know my weaknesses.

So what happened a few days ago? I started playing a new MMORPG. One that I had held out playing for all of 3 weeks after it came out. But it called to me. It whispered into my ear at night. I knew exactly what to say and what I wanted to hear. It got inside my head and I was helpless.

Captain Trevor Shafer

U.S.S. Daniel Jackson

Yes, I am playing ‘Star Trek Online’ and loving every minute of it. And yes, that is indeed my ship, the U.S.S. Daniel Jackson.

I am weak and I make no excuses for it. But to put everything into context, I have been a Star Trek fan for almost all of my life. I remember staying up with my father late on Saturday nights as a small kid and watching the Original Series (Kirk, Spock, McCoy…) on our local PBS station. Then, when I was around 13 or so, I turned into what most people would call a Star Trek nerd. I still am to this day. I am the guy who knows all the useless trivia, both on screen and behind the scenes. I’m the guy that can receite dialogue while watching the episode. I am the guy who goes to Star Trek Conventions (and was a dealer there for a few years). And yes, I am THAT GUY who owns and wears on occasion, a Starfleet Uniform.

And for those wondering what my wife has to think about all of this? She’s totally cool with it. She has know virtually from day one how much I love Star Trek. Online, I have been going by the handle ‘Twev1701′ since 1994. Even though she was bit frightened the first time she came over to my home by the sheer volume of Star Trek stuf I have, she was cool with it and never asked me once to give any of it up. She was even cool enough to let me and my guys wear Starfleet Communicators (Next Generation style) on our tuxedos in our wedding!
