Geocities

Hearing the news last week that Yahoo! is shutting the doors to the Geocities community made me quite sad. While it is true that I haven’t used Geocities since they were acquired by Yahoo! (I’ll get to that in a minute) it still makes me sad that it’s going away.

Back in the spring of 1996, I was in my senior year of high school. Our school had jut gotten the internet in the form of an ISDN line. To make a long story short, I ended up coding my first website ever by building a full website for our school’s newspaper. This was all handcrafted HTML, and from that first fateful page, I was hooked.

After graduation, I worked the summer in anticipation of going to college in August. Still feeling the thrill of doing and maintaining that website, I wanted to do a site of my own. The problem was that I didn’t have a server like the school did to host the site. Remember, this was back in 1996 and we were all on dial-up connections and cheap computer was considered anything under $1500, so hosting it from home on a spare machine quite frankly didn’t exist! After searching the web, Geocities was not only one of the only games out there offering free hosting, but they let you have full access, meaning you weren’t constrained to use prefab templates.

Finding a host was the easy part, now it was time to find something to make a page about. Blogs really didn’t exist back then like they do now, and moblogs weren’t even thought of yet given that we were surfing the net on ultra-fast 28.8 baud modems. After some thinking, I came to a most logical conclusion. I would make a site dedicated to the one thing me and all my friends were obsessed over for the entire length of our senior year — Highlander!

I thew together a website and maintained it for a few months until college really started to take its toll on me. In the spring of 1997 I left college due to the school not offering any real degrees I was interested in, and started working full time in sales. After a while, I honestly forgot all about that page. By 2001, I owned Twev1701.com, had my own dedicated hosting, and beyond what Geocities offered.

I did think about my page once during that time though. In January 1999, I got an email from Geocities letting me know they had been acquired by Yahoo!. Shortly after that email, I received a nice welcome email from Yahoo! letting me know that the username and web address I had for the past 3 years had to be changed since they were merging the Geocities users with its own userbase. No longer was I ‘The_Gathering’. No, I had to change my name to ‘The_Gathering_1999′. That’s when I officially turned my back on Geocities, and quite frankly, never went back.

However, I still remember that site fondly and have great memories of my early days cutting my teeth on HTML. I would code like a mad man in Notepad and do my image editing in Paint Shop Pro. To that end, I have tracked down all the original code, images, and contect from that site. I present this to you, in it’s original form. No modernizing, no George Lucas ‘reimaging’. This is how the site looked after its last update on January 2, 1997. Enjoy!

Moblog Fondness

Lying here in bed gives me a lot of time to just let my mind wander. I keep coming back to a thought I had earlier today while cutting the grass. For some reason, I started thinking about my old moblog I had on TextAmerica.

Back when I decided to start a moblog, I started it on a service called Buzznet. As a matter of fact, not only are they still around, but so is my original moblog. (insert link) It wasn’t until I started reading Kevin Rose’s blog that I got interested in TextAmerica. You see, back then he had just started using TextAmerica for his moblog, and always wanting to be on the bleeding edge, I got myself an account and started posting all my pictures there. Everything was fine and dandy. I really liked the service and it was pretty reliable. Then, in July 2006, they announced they were doing away with the free accounts all of us had grown to love and were going to start charging a fee to keep your account. Don’t quote me on this but I do believe that the fee was $99 a year. Then, to really piss people off, if you didn’t pay by a certain date, they deleted you free account. What a dick move, eh? Since that time, I have used flickr as my host for my moblog.

My original moblog on Buzznet still exists!

On a side note, TextAmerica didn’t last too long after that. They ended up shutting down in December 2007.

What I really miss about those days of using Buzznet and TextAmerica was the fun and newness of having a moblog. I used take pictures of anything and everything and throw it up there regardless if I thought someone might be interested or not. I tend to find myself catering to flickr users by constantly asking myself, “will they find this interesting?” before uploading a photo. I really need to reset my brain and go back to the mentality I had back when I first started my moblog. I should be posting photos because I like them, not because I’m hoping someone else will.

It’s almost the same thing I went through with Twitter a few months ago. I had to stop concerning myself with how often I tweeted and how many followers I had. Was I on Twitter for me or them? This is the way I need to approach my moblog from here on out. Back to basics.

Heat Wave

We are in day 3 of what has to be the earliest heat wave in memory. It’s been in the 90s for the past 2 days, and we’re almost there now, holing currently at 88.6 degrees. What’s so bad about this? First off, it’s April. April people! Secondly, I was in New York on Thursday, and I saw flurries there. That’s right, goddamn snow. We literally went from 50s and 60s last week, to 30s on Thursday, 60s on Friday, and then 90s on Saturday, Sunday, and now Monday. WTF?

Today is supposed to be the last of the heat if you believe the weathermen. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the low to mid 80s, and then on Wednesday, we’re back down to the more seasonal 60s.

A quick story for you. Last night at 10:00pm, it was 92.2 degrees in our bedroom. That was with both windows open and the ceiling fan on high. I finally broke down and put an air conditioner in the window. Granted, my biggest reason (no pun intended) was my pregnant wife. I have never, ever, out an air conditioner in so early.

That’s it, I’m done ranting and raving. Besides, my keys are starting to melt off my keyboard…

One Week In

So here I am about to start my second week at my new store with my new job. How it’s going so far? I’d say pretty well given the circumstances. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done in that department, and I know it’s going to be a struggle getting everyone on the same page. But then again, if I was walking into a department that was perfect and ran itself I think I would be bored out of my mind!

Today is my last closing shift for the week. For those of your keeping score at home, this will be my 5th closing shift since I started there. I have only worked 7 shifts at my new store. You do the math.

This week looks to be a fairly straight forward one. I close tonight, have a mid-shift tomorrow, open on Wednesday, then I’m off to Vestal, NY for an all day training class on Thursday, and finally I get to have a day off on Friday. Then unfortunately I get to work the entire weekend, but that’s okay. At least I get a day off before then.

Yesterday was a pretty nice day off for me. The weather was nice enough to cooperate with my plans for getting the yards cut. Usually with the first cut of the year comes my annual fight with my machinery. No matter how I try, I just don’t seem to be machine compatible. If it has a spark plug, it hates me. This year however was most certainly the exception to the rule. Aside from having to renew my fuel sources, everything started up without incident. About 45 minutes later, the yards were completely trimmed and cut. Viola!

Today is another story however. It’s cold, damp, windy, and rainy outside. It’s one of those days where you just want to throw a box set into the DVD player and not leave the couch. Hell, the dog doesn’t even want to go outside to go to the bathroom. I can’t say I blame the pooch. I myself am not looking forward to going out there in about 2 1/2 hours to head work. I really wish my job had a telecommuting option on days like today.

19 Again

This week has been serious “mess with my head” kind of week.

I started my new job at my new store on Monday morning. For those of you not in the know, I’ve transferred to the Edwardsville store to be the department manager of the appliance and kitchen departments. For me, it was a move that made total sense. It cut my commute in half, got me a nice raise, got me out of Installed Sales, and more importantly, now allows me to collect those sick spiffs for selling appliances.

So I started off on Monday morning working an 8am-5pm shift. The shift was not a big deal since I was used to a similar shift back in Installed Sales. What really freaked me out was being back on the sales floor. It’s been over 3 years since I have worked on the sales floor. In my mind, I got used to the confines of my office. Add to that anxiety, the fact that I walked into this know little to nothing about the appliances we sell. The last time I sold appliances was when I used to help out the appliance department at Sears back in the late 1990s. Thankfully, I had some backup with me all day to field the customer’s questions. The funny thing was that all the while I was nervous and stressing about what I should be doing, all I could think about was how I would know exactly what to do if I was back in my office at my old store. In the back of my mind I started wondering if I had made a big mistake.

Tuesday would prove to be a whole different ball game. I was working my first 2pm-11pm shift in over 3 years. To top that all off, I was closing by myself. Now I was working a shift where I had no product knowledge backup, and I was worried how I would last until 11pm since I am usually in bed by 10:30pm. Surprisingly, I made it through relatively unscathed.

Wednesday found me with a 10am-7pm shift. I spent a few hours that day working on my testing I needed to qualify myself to earn those wonderful spiffs. It was while taking some tests on sales techniques and credit procedures that I had a very vivid flashback. I all reminded me of when I first started at Sears back in the spring of 1997. During my 3 weeks of training, a full week of that was back in a little office, watching training videos on an old Phillips CD-i. It was a week straight of watching sales techniques, credit procedures, and product knowledge. Being in a store where I know maybe 1% of the staff, not knowing where anything is at, and focusing on making that sale, made me feel like that young 19 year old again.

We now come to tonight, Thursday night. I closed once again, working the 2pm-11pm shift. It was today that I finally started to feel comfortable in my own skin again. It was when I finally go to take a lunch at 8pm that things really came back into focus for me. Jess had called me about 15 minutes before lunch telling me she had gotten a pizza from a local pizza place we both like for dinner. Feeling jealous, she then stated the obvious – why don’t I go home for lunch? This made total sense since one of the reasons I wanted the transfer to begin with was to be closer to home. A short 10-minute ride and I found myself in my living room, watching ‘Good Eats’ and eating pizza with my wife. I stayed for about 40 minutes, and then had to head back. Even after spending 40 minutes with my wife, I still back it back 2 minutes early. It was then, that I felt really good about making the move. This really was the right decision for me.

Calm

Yesterday was awesome, sad, stressful, and downright frustrating.

My day started out great when I first woke up, knowing that it was my last day not only in Installed Sales but the Wilkes-Barre store as well. Then I checked my bank account to make sure my paycheck at hit. My blood started to boil. I’m not going to go into specifics, but there were almost $220 in erroneous bank charges against my account. This really put me in a pissed of mood. Not only had those charges sent me into the red, but coupled with those charges were insufficient funds fees for each one. Now instead of having my full paycheck in there, if was down to more than half. Taking out the money I needed for bills, this left me with a whopping $100 for the next 2 weeks, which meant I was not unable to pick up the Easter gift I have been planning to get Jess.

Trying to put my mood aside, I made my way to work. Work for the most part wasn’t all that bad. I got to piss off 2 customers which made me happy, and I did little to nothing since it was my last day. Any major issues that came up I passed on to someone else with a smile saying the words, “I won’t be here to see this through.”

This was a sweet filling to the shit day I was having though. I was on the phone with my bank every hour on the hour trying to get my account straightened out. Long story short — they went from telling me it’s my fault and that they cannot do anything, to finally getting $150 out of the $220 back. I was at that point willing to eat the $70 since I knew they wouldn’t give anymore. Hell, I had to really sweet talk the account manager there to give me more than $74 after 4 hours of talking. All in all, I’d say this was a victory!

Feeling good, Jess and I went out for our Good Friday heathen meal — roast beef sandwiches at Arby’s. We then went up to the mall and I got her her surprise Easter present: Little Big Planet for the PS3. In fact, she’s playing it right now as I write this in the living room. She has been wanting this game for months, and with her being on Easter break until Wednesday, I thought this was the perfect time to get it for her.

It was a day that started good, got really shitty, and then ending on a really good note. That’s the way I like ‘em!
