Humpty Dumpty

What happens when you combine an uncoordinated geek and icy steps? The answer is one sore back. One very sore back, actually.

I had to go out to a customer’s home today to take a look at some issues they had with some kitchen cabinets we installed. After an hour or so there discussing all of the options, I exited his home. We talked on his porch for a few minutes, at which point I shook his hand, thanked him, and left.

However, my method of leaving left much to be desired.

I stepped off his porch and onto his first, icy step. This is the point where my heels point towards the sky, and my back landed on the first step. I then got to ride down the remaining 15 steps on my back.

I felt a little sore naturally after I got up, but laughed at myself and was on my way. In fact, I felt so fine that I almost didn’t report it. It wasn’t until I went to lunch and sat in a booth at Dino’s Pizza for 40 minutes that my back started to really tighten up. By the time I got back to the store, I knew I needed to report it.

I didn’t fill out all the official paperwork because I didn’t want to go to the doctor. However, I have officially changed my stance. I will be going into work tomorrow and going right to the company sanctioned doctor.

I pretty much know what to expect, since this is not my first time injuring my back. The doctor will put me on light duty for about 2 weeks, some pain pills, and another dose of muscle relaxers. He’ll tell me to ice and heat, and to take it easy in general.

I do have to say that my back doesn’t hurt as much as it has in the past when I’ve hurt it. I equate that to the fact that I didn’t pull just a single muscle like in the past, but have literally beaten all the muscles in my back simultaneously.

Oh joy!

Scuttled Again

I’ve been trying for the past 3 days to sit down and write a few posts about what’s been going on and what’s on my mind. Unfortunately, my short attention span has gotten the better of me all three nights and I’ve written nothing.

On a side note, I’m amazed at how often I’ve been using the word ‘scuttled’ since I’ve started reading some maritime books.

This is just one of the many reasons I love Stargate Atlantis.

KHAAAAAN!!!!!

I played through the Story Mode on Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe today, beating the DC side of the story. About 3/4 of the way through, there was a great cut scene with The Joker that had me rolling. You get +5 Geek Point if you instantly get the reference.

New Year’s Day

Today is going to be spent working on the house. Here is what I have planned out:

  • Install New Bathroom Faucet
  • Hang New Ironing Board/Iron Caddy
  • Clean Up Living Room
  • Wash All New Glassware Purchased From Pier 1 Yesterday (God Bless Gift Cards!!)
  • Cook A Kick Ass Turkey Dinner For The Wife and I

Once Jess gets home from work and we have dinner, I think it’ll be a nice quiet night together. We’ll probably watch a few episodes of ‘Bones’ on DVD, and possibly ‘Wall-E’ on Blu-ray.

After today, I have a pretty decent work schedule. I work Friday & Saturday, off Sunday, work Monday & Tuesday, run an installer certification class at the Wilkes-Barre Best Western on Wednesday & Thursday, and then I have Friday, Saturday & Sunday off. Not too shabby if you ask me.

I am considering going out and picking up ‘Dead Space’ for the PS3 this week, but I have decided to hold off on that until I finally beat on of my existing games. I think the game in question to beat will be ‘Metal Gear Solid 4′. Once I beat that, then I will allow myself to purchase a new game.

New Year, New Attitude

Last year I set out to accomplish 5 goals.

1) Lose 30lbs
2) Learn to play the guitar (real, not Hero)
3) Get a new job
4) Learn to enjoy life a little more and to lighten up
5) Finally find a healthy balance between technology and the “outside world”
5a) Write a lot more then I have been in the past few years

Of those above goals, I managed to accomplish 0. I was en route to accomplish at least 3 of those goals, but were derailed by life along the way.

Instead of making goals this year, I am making a pledge. I am making a pledge to have a new attitude this year, and not to let life trample me. Too often I get caught up in all the minutiae and let things overwhelm me. This not only puts me in a semi-permanent piss poor attitude, but also affects everyone around me. I get told to ‘lighten up’ or to ‘snap out of it’, and instead of dealing with the issue or the cause I merely push all my feeling to the back of cavern I call my cranial cavity and act how I am ‘supposed to’. No, I am not saying that I am going to turn into a raging bad ass, not am I suddenly going to start telling people what I really think of them. What I am going to do is something that I should have been doing all along: putting me and my wife first. When my wife and I have plans and someone want to come along and try and break those plans, I’m going to tell them ‘no’ and let them know why. For some reason it seems that everyone else was allowed to say ‘no’ to things but me and my wife. I never could really figure that one out. So starting today, gone are the days of rolling over and breaking our plans just to keep the peace. It’s going to be the same way with personal plans as well. I never made it to the gym a fraction of the times that I wanted to because something would always come up and make me change my plans. No more.

The Chinese are calling 2009 the year of the Ox. I am officially calling 2009 the year of the Shafers.
