Last year I set out to accomplish 5 goals.
1) Lose 30lbs
2) Learn to play the guitar (real, not Hero)
3) Get a new job
4) Learn to enjoy life a little more and to lighten up
5) Finally find a healthy balance between technology and the “outside world”
5a) Write a lot more then I have been in the past few years
Of those above goals, I managed to accomplish 0. I was en route to accomplish at least 3 of those goals, but were derailed by life along the way.
Instead of making goals this year, I am making a pledge. I am making a pledge to have a new attitude this year, and not to let life trample me. Too often I get caught up in all the minutiae and let things overwhelm me. This not only puts me in a semi-permanent piss poor attitude, but also affects everyone around me. I get told to ‘lighten up’ or to ‘snap out of it’, and instead of dealing with the issue or the cause I merely push all my feeling to the back of cavern I call my cranial cavity and act how I am ‘supposed to’. No, I am not saying that I am going to turn into a raging bad ass, not am I suddenly going to start telling people what I really think of them. What I am going to do is something that I should have been doing all along: putting me and my wife first. When my wife and I have plans and someone want to come along and try and break those plans, I’m going to tell them ‘no’ and let them know why. For some reason it seems that everyone else was allowed to say ‘no’ to things but me and my wife. I never could really figure that one out. So starting today, gone are the days of rolling over and breaking our plans just to keep the peace. It’s going to be the same way with personal plans as well. I never made it to the gym a fraction of the times that I wanted to because something would always come up and make me change my plans. No more.
The Chinese are calling 2009 the year of the Ox. I am officially calling 2009 the year of the Shafers.
