The End Of Summer Days
To me, today signifies the end o summer. In my own little calendar in my heard, Summer begins on June 1st, and fall begins on September 1st. Winter is then followed on November 1st, and spring finally arrives on March 1st. It’s not exactly accurate, but in my head, this is how the seasons run.
That’s all kind of funny considering that according to my calendar, Jess and I have been going to the beach in the fall for the past 3 years. In fact, we leave in a few days for this year’s trip.
I didn’t even have to know today was September 1st when I woke up this morning. When I looked outside, there was a nice blanket of fog outside, and every spider web was shining with a heavy layer of dew. I remember vividly these were the mornings of the first day of school. True, now the kids go back earlier, usually the last week in August, but for me, the Wednesday after Labor Day was also the first day of school.
Speaking of the beach, I have 3 days of work left to button everything up before I have 6 days off. Five of those six days will be spent lounging on a New Jersey beach. That last day off is reserved to do whatever the hell I feel like doing.
I am really looking forward to our trip this year. With both of our jobs, and Jess still going to Grad School full time, this is the first chance we have had to get away since our last trip to Gettysburg back in early May. While it is true that we live together, we don’t get to see each other every night like most ‘normal’ couples would. In all honesty, we’re lucky if we can spend a few hours together a week, let along an full evening. So, having 5 full days of relaxing on the beach with my wife is something I am very much looking forward to. Now I just have to make sure we get everything packed up, the dog off to Uncle Jerry’s house, and then loaded into the car so we can leave Thursday morning as planned. Plus, I’m hoping my vacation reading order from Amazon.com will arrive in time. It should be here tomorrow, so we will see about that.
For me now, it’s about that time to head to work. This is something I am not looking forward to, but at least I know this week will not only be short, but have a sweet ending.
