Old Days

Thanks to Konami, the gamer side of me has been reborn.

I picked up Metal Gear Solid 4 on Thursday when it came out. I was going to hold off and buy it next Thursday after work so i could start playing it on my vacation, but I just couldn’t resist buying it on release day. I’ve always been a big Metal Gear fan, even though I never got around to beating Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty. (in all fairness, my ex taking our copy with her had something to do with that) I came home that night, and threw the disc into my PS3 while Jess went outside ion the porch to write a paper for school.

Let’s just say the game sucked me right in. So much so that I was up until after 2am playing last night, even though I woke up at 5am yesterday to go to work.

Yeah, that sounds like the old me.

I’m about 4 hours into the game and have just started the Second Act, but with the way Act 1 ended, this looks like it’s going to be a pretty killer game.

In other new around the Earth, today is Father’s Day. Jess is currently at work and won’t be home until about 4pm. So, I’m going to hop in the shower after this, and go see my dad. Then when she gets home, she’s going to take a quick shower and we have to head down to Easton to see her dad and have dinner with him. (about an hour and 40 minute drive) So, given that I just woke up at noon, this is pretty much my day. I do have to swing by the grocery store and pick up some cat food since we’re all out. Trust me, having hungry cats is not a good thing — they’ll eat your toes off if they’re hungry enough!

Other than all that, I go back to work at 6am tomorrow, and go straight thru until Thursday. At 6pm on Thursday, I officially start my vacation and won’t return back to work until 6am on 6/30/08. During this time off I’m going to work on the house a bit, and play lots and lots of video games. I’m hoping I can get pretty close to beating MGS4, and get a lot farther in GTA4. We’re also planning to do a special episode og Growing Up Geek on 6/27/08 which should be fun. I’ll let more details slip closer to the actual date.

For now, I’m off to the shower and to get my day stared.

The Heat Is On

We are currently in the midst of our first ‘heat wave’ of the year. While not technically a heat wave, 3 days above 90 degrees constitutes one for me!

So, let’s talk about my weekend since we are on the cusp of another work week. Friday night after work, Kelly, Jess and I went out to my buddy’s bar with a bunch of friends from work to help celebrate Lisa’s birthday. While quite a bit of alcohol was consumed, I was a good geek and didn’t overdo it. We hung out for a few hours, and ended up leaving around 10:30pm or so. I can tell you a great time was had by all!

Then we woke up early on Saturday morning and headed to Knoebels for the day. The weather forecast for the day said it was going to be near 90, and we thought that would be nice weather to hit the park.

They lie, they all lie!

It ended up hitting 97 degrees, and I was the unlucky one who ended up getting heat exhaustion. It got so bad I actually stopped sweating for a good 30 minutes or so in the 97 degree weather. After taking in as much fluids as my body could handle and getting some food in me, I started to feel better. But by then, it was after 8pm, and we all decided we had had enough for the way anyway. However, for the 6 hours at the park before I got sick, we had an absolute blast! I managed to get both Jess and Kelly sick on the Tilt A Whirl. We also managed to get Kelly on The Phoenix and totally scare the shit out of her on the way up. If it wasn’t for the heat, we would have stayed longer. But, that’s just an excuse or us to make plans for another trip.

Today was mostly a day of rest for me. While Jess has some projects she had to work on for Graduate School, I went to the grocery store and got supplies for some BLTs for lunch, and then some corn on the cob to accompany the hamburgers and hot dogs that had a date with my grill. While she worked, I cooked all day.

In between meals, I did manged to go upstairs and pull some old server log records I had printed out from this site back in 2006. This site really ook off back then, due to some very well timed posts. Back in January of 2007, this site was seeing over 3500 unique visitors per day, over 1 million hits per month, and moving about 35 gigabytes of information.

Not too shabby for a little blog.

Once I had to leave the sever/hosting company I was with during that time due to my excessive traffic, I never seemed to get those traffic numbers back. Now that I am with another host that seems to be on par speed and reliability wise as my original host, I’m actually starting to see a return to some decent traffic numbers. Granted, it’s no where near what it was back in 2006, but I’m seeing over 300 unique visitors a day.

Why am I even bringing this up? I’ll tell you why.

For years I have been trying out different ventures in an attempt to ‘make my mark’ on the internet. Every one of those ventures as turned out not to be much of anything. They were ideas that I could not improve upon, or did not have the resources to fully realize. All the while though, I’ve had my site. While other things around me failed, my site was a success. However, I was so consumed with delusions of coming up with the next big thing, I’ve ignored the one thing that really did work — this site. So, that’s what I am going to be focusing on. I’m not going to go and change everything and ruin a working formula. Basically, I am going to keep everything almost the way it is. What I am going to do is increase the amount and questionable quality of the site’s content.

Sometimes when you keep looking forward, you forget to look at where you are and what’s around you.

Man’s Best Friend

I have been off for the past 5 days. Four of these were scheduled, one was unscheduled (sick day). In that time, I have gotten a chance to spend a good amount of time with Loki. Let me tell you, he has changed quite a bit.

This was the first extended time off I have had all year (more than 2 days). Loki and I hung out most of this time, and went for at least one walk everyday. After the 3rd day together, he started not leaving my side. When I was on the computer, he would lay at my side on the floor or under my desk. When I was watching TV or playing some games, he would lay next to me on the couch. Even now as I sit in bed watching TV and writing this, Loki is laying right by my side. Over the past few days, he has really become the dog I have always hoped he’d become.
