Home Again

It’s been about 3 months that I have been without my main computer system. Back on June 23rd, my computer had a meltdown. I thought it was the power supply since it failed a power-up test, so I purchased a new 700w unit. I installed that and the system still wouldn’t boot. Since this was right before we were leaving for England, I really didn’t have the time or money to futz with it, so I just stripped out the hard drives, threw them into a server, and walked away. Literally. I installed all the programs I needed for my day-to-day activities on the laptop, setup all the media files on the server to be remotely access, and then quite frankly blocked off my computer room. That was that.

So, since I am having a little get together next Saturday, I decided that it would be a good idea to clean out the computer room. It only took me about 2 hours to clear, clean, and organize the whole room. After all was said and done, Jess was in the living room doing her homework, and I didn’t want to watch TV and disturb her, so I decided to throw my system on the old tech bench and give it a look. Knowing that the trouble had something to do with the video card, I decided to start there. I hooked up a spare power supply and decided to try a dry test. I booted up the system with nothing more than the optical drives installed. The power came on, but nothing happened. No posting, no beeping, no nothing. Knowing full well this is not a good sign, I then delved in. I looked over the motherboard and didn’t see any blown capacitors or scoring. I then decided to tackle the video card. I pulled it from its AGP slot and immediately saw the problem. The fan had quite literally been sheered from the heat sink housing. This explains everything. Without the fan to cool the card, the card overheated, and then shorted out, causing the system to short and not boot anymore. Now I needed to find out how far the damage extended. I got out my box of spare parts and found an old AGP video card. I slapped that bad boy in, had the system blessed by a Priest, and turned it on. To my utter amazement, I saw a BIOS screen. I went into the BIOS setup and was astonished to see that the processor was registering as being fully functional, as well as the RAM. This got me very excited. Long story short, I disassembled the server, put a 40 GB drive in for an OS drive and a 500 GB drive for a storage drive. A Windows XP install later my system is alive and breathing again!

Now the bad news.

Not knowing what unforsaken video card was now in my system, I did a DirectX diagnostic to find out what the hell I had installed. As it turns out, it was an Nvidia TNT2 64 PRO card. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, let me try and put it into normal terms. This would be like restoring a nice 1964 Mustang, and then painting it with house paint. It may run great, but it looks like shit.

I went shopping today for a new video card, and I found a decent one at Circuit City. I came home and looked online, and sadly, the better value was in the retail store. So, I think I may head back there this week and pick up the card. I was going to hold off, but when I tried to play Raven Shield tonight, it told me that my video card was not supported. I started to cry. Seriously, Jess had to hold me and shit. It was not a proud moment.

So, now that I have my computer back up and running, I know this is going to sound lame, but I feel whole again. I honestly think that if I didn’t clean the computer room yesterday that my system would still be sitting on the floor collecting dust. It wasn’t until I cleaned the room, cleared my desk, and made a docking area for my laptop that I felt empty. I was sitting at my desk and didn’t have my main system there. All I had was my laptop hooked up to one of my 19” monitors. It just didn’t feel right. Now that I have my main system hooked up to a nice 19” LCD monitor with my laptop right next to me, it feel home again.

It felt so good to have everything back up and running that I even went and downloaded some new wallpapers tonight. Although I have to admit, it was not my idea. Jess actually suggested that since my system is back up to start posting wallpapers again. So if you like today’s wallpaper, you have my awesome wife to thank for it.

I just need to get that video card tomorrow and get my sniping action on.

The Mirror

I starting something tonight that I have been wanting to do for a few years now. I am writing an autobiography of sorts. Basically, I am taking all the major years of my life and writing down all the major events of that year that helped to shape me into the person I am today. The older I get, the fuzzier some of the details get. I’d like to look back 10 years from now and remember everything as clearly as I do now. And with turning 30 in 2 short weeks, I figured what better time to sit down and scribe these as now.

This was going along at a great pace until I got to 1993. I remember something that I had totally forgotten about during a very rough time of my young life. While all of the other years had maybe 6 sentances to them, I wrote almost a 1/2 page on this one single event that I had forgotten about. After that, I just sat back for a few minutes and really thought about what was going on back then and the steps I took to rectify the situation. Looking back, I’m really proud of myself for making the right decisions, but it’s scary how close I was to making the wrong ones.

I think that’s enough introspection for one night. Time to lay down with my iPod for a while.

RSS Feeds

Ok, I’ve got almost everything now feeding the sidebars via RSS feeds. This should really decrease the site load time. I have a few more ideas to tweak the load time, but that’ll have to wait. Gotta get shower and dressed to go to the farm now.

Minor Enhancements

I did do some minor enhancements to the site last night. All of the changes happened in the 2 right sidebars.

First, everything except for my twitter badge is now being fed via RSS instead of JAVA. This has helped decrease the load time of the site. I’m going to be looking into a way to format the RSS feed from twitter so that I can get rid of that as well. Unfortunately, the only thing that I really can’t streamline is my Google AdSense ads. They will have to remain the way they are.

I know from my wireless connection on my laptop that the site now loads in about 1/2 the time it did yesterday. It’s a shame when the theme I’m using is pretty streamlined to begin with, and then I bog it down with tons of JAVA applets and feeds.

Hopefully this site will load up in no time soon.

A Day In Nature

We got a cal last night from my mother inviting us to an outing down our farm on Sunday. Given that the weather is quite fall-like, and that we both have the day off, this sounds like a smashing idea.

We haven’t had the opportunity to take Loki down the farm yet, which is a shame. So, I think we’re going to pack the little guy up today and take him. I still have the 100ft rope I bought for him when we went on that trip to New York. Although he did almost crew through one section of it (I would have done the same in his situation), I can just cut it off and re-tie it.

They said that they were going to head down around noon or so. I think we’ll probably do the same. I just need to hop int the shower (Jess just got out), pack the cameras, pack out chairs, and Loki’s things. The only thing I may do is take a slight detour to somewhere and buy him a new tube of tennis balls. I’m not too sure where his went to. Of course, the best place to get him these is Target since I can also get him a new rope toy, but I’ll have to see if I can convince Jess to go up there with me on her day off.

Back Into The Swing Of Things

I know I haven’t gotten around to posting about the rest of the trip. There are lots of fun details — too many to really put to virtual paper. Let’s just say this and we’ll leave it at that.

Some people showed us way too much skin this weekend. One of us got locked outside in just a towel. And at least 2 of us got drunk.

You can form your own images from that.

I’m still really unhappy with the load time on my site. I like have the content that is up, but there has to be a way to streamline it even more. That’s something that I really want to start looking into.

I know I have really gotten away from blogging and that really bothers me. I can remember years ago posting almost everyday. Hell, there were days when I would post multiple times a day. I really want/need to get back to that.

But before that, I really want to optimize the site.
