To be honest, I’ve never been much of a Spider-Man fan. I’m a die hard DC fan and a Batman fanboy. I AM however, and huge fan of Sam Raimi, and that alone gives me faith in this film.
To start, yes, Bruce Campbell IS in this film, and yes, this did make the movie for me!!!!
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk continuity. This probably the best sequel I have ever seen. And no, it’s not better then the first film. Why do I say that? Because to me what Sam Raimi did was merely pick up where the story left off 2 years ago like nothing happened. It’s like all of us got up to go to the bathroom…for 2 years granted…and when we came back, it was as if we were seeing the same movie, just 2 years into the story. Did I lose you sweetheart? I hope not. A big part of that has to do with the fact that all of the original, and I mean ALL OF THEM, came back to make the sequel. This is a very big thing to me. Like everyone learned with my once beloved Batman movie franchise, it’s hard to except a new Bruce Wayne/Batman every movie. When the 1st movie in what is to be a series is made, the people who initially play each character BECOME that character for most people. I know they do for me, so I’m just going to assume everyone is as weird as I am for a few minutes. Now, with that in mind, imagine if you will that when we meet back up with Sam and Frodo in ‘The Two Towers’, Sam is still played by Sean Astin, but Frodo is now played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Seeeee?? Now you understand where I am coming from. It ruins the perception of fantasy when you have different actors trying to channel the same character. Damn, this is going on for a lot longer then I expected so we’re going to move on.
Casting and characters aside, this was one hell of a well written movie as well. It dealt with things that you normally wouldn’t deal with in your typical superhero movie, and I have to get down on my knees and thank heavens for that. The characer exploration of Peter Parker in this movie is nothing short of brilliant. If you’ve seen the movie, you know what I am talking about. If you haven’t get off your ass and go see it! You can thank me later.
Now, would I go see this again?? Yes, I would go see it again. This is one of those movie where you really do get lost in it for 2 hours and feel as if you’re running right alongside the characters on the screen.
In my opinion, we need more movies like this and less crap like we’ve seen lately.
